Why Z? The Z refers to the Zero hour or Zulu Time. Zulu being the phonetic for the letter Z. This is what used to be called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) which we now call Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This the base from which all time zones are referenced. It's a global time reference instead of a local one (like 2PM, or even 2PM Eastern Standard Time). It doesnt change during the year (like Daylight Savings) or depend on any local rules. Using the Zulu time reference elminates any ambiguity as to what time someone is talking about.
